Term 6 Overview

Pirates and mermaids

This term the children will be focussing on the topic of Pirates & Mermaids and holidays.

We will be encouraging children to use their imagination and thinking about the world and where they might live. We will look at holiday destinations both home and abroad.

Our Fabulous Finish will be a pirate and mermaid dressing up day with the Nursery children.

The children will continue to bring homework home on a Friday relating to what they have learnt that week. It needs to be completed and returned by the following Monday. We would be grateful if you could make any comments at the bottom of each sheet.

Literacy

Outdoor Learning

Outdoor learning continues on a weekly basis this term. Please send your child in old clothes that are suitable for the weather and wellington boots. Your child will also need a coat with a hood if it is raining and suntan lotion applied if the weather is warm.

Transition

The children are having opportunities to meet with the Year 1 staff and explore the environment. For the final week of term we will be looking at the book The hundred decker bus which will link in to Year 1’s term 1 topic transport.

Term 5 Overview

Mini-beasts

This term the children will be focussing on the topic of Mini-beasts.

We will be looking at all different kinds of creepy crawlies and learning about their habitats, how they travel, what they eat and the number of legs they have. The children will be learning through planned play-based activities so they have fun whilst they learn.

The children will continue to bring homework home on a Friday relating to what they have learnt that week. It needs to be completed and returned by the following Monday. We would be grateful if you could make any comments at the bottom of each sheet.

Drusillas Trip

This term Squirrels and Hedgehogs will be visiting Drusillas Zoo Park. This is to finish off our topics on Animals and Mini-beasts. The children will have the opportunity to meet many different wild animals and handle some creepy crawlies.

Term 4 Overview

Animals

This term our topic is all about Animals. In the first week we will be travelling back in time to the land of the dinosaurs to find out about creatures that used to roam our planet. The rest of the term we will be finding out about different groups of animals: Pets, farm, jungle and those living in the wild.

Literacy

Transition

After the success of our Chinese New Year Day with Nursery the Nursery children will continue to visit Reception this term for story time and the Reception children will start to join Year 1 for a story as part of transition.

Easter bonnets

We will be inviting parents in t0  school to help the children make Easter bonnets ready for a fashion show at the end of term.

Easter

The children will be finding out about Easter through ‘Mary’s Story’. They will act out the story using small world characters, make Easter cards and crafts and think about new life as part of the topic on animals.

Term 3 Overview

This term we will be learning about bears – their names, what they look like, their habitats and what they eat.  This will include bears in the wild and toy bears.

The children will be inviting a bear from home for the term. They will be taking part in a Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Their bear will then have their portrait painted and measured.

In the last week of term the children will be finding out about Chinese New Year and the country China. We will be joining the Nursery to celebrate together.

The main text will be We’re Going on a Bear Hunt but we will also be reading many other bear stories. For example: This is the bear, Where’s my teddy and Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?

Tips for parents

  • Visit the library to find books about bears (fiction and non-fiction) – act out stories, help children to write their own version.
  • Count out objects (up to 20) to give to your bear.
  • Give a name to your bear at home and then have a try at writing it down.
  • Make a sandwich for your bear and cut it into your favourite shape.
