The government is providing funding of £450 million over three academic years to provide new and substantial primary school sport funding. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary.
Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
At Shinewater, we recognise the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of all our children. We believe that an innovative, varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all our children. Our Primary School Sports Funding enables us to continue and extend our provision through employing additional sports professionals, who work alongside our staff to deliver in-house quality PE sessions whilst at the same time, training our staff in the delivery of a more diverse range of activities. PE sessions have included Extreme Frisbee and Archery; linking PE to other areas of our curriculum such as Geography and History.
The sports professionals run additional weekly after school clubs and activities, enabling more of our children to experience sport and activities at a more challenging and competitive level .
We also use some of the funding to offer taster sessions in sports and activities that would usually be inaccessible to the children. This year we organised a taster day for all Year 4 children, enabling them to try windsurfing, sailing, paddle boarding and raft building. This was followed by an after school course run over six weeks for a group of Year 5 children. This resulted in them all gaining an initial qualification in sailing.
