Terms 5 & 6 Overview

Our topic for the final two terms of the year will be Tales from Outer Suburbia. We will be focussing on fantasy short stories by Shaun Tann and will be exploring these throughout our literacy lessons.

In art, we will be using Shaun Tann’s individual style to influence pieces of work. We will also be using our science topic to create detailed water colour pencil drawings in the style of Linnaean illustration.

We will begin term 5 looking at decimals and then will later move on to look at geometry and shape.

In term 5 we will be looking at living things and their habitats.  We will be dissecting plants and looking at the life processes of plants and animals.

We will be looking at similarities and differences through the study of human and physical geography in our local area.

We will be using our geography lessons to inspire our ICT lessons by creating our own maps of local areas using mapping software.

Outdoor  Learning and PE

In Year 5, PE and Outdoor Learning will continue to take place every Tuesday Afternoon. PE will be taught by Mr Anderson and Outdoor Learning will be taught by Mrs Dyke.

Reading at home

Thank you to those of you who are hearing your child read regularly at home. Asking them questions about what they have just read is incredibly helpful and can help them to understand texts better. Reading records are collected in every Thursday and merits awarded for every time the children have read. Additionally, for every week they read at least 3 times at home, they are given a sticker towards a new book of their choosing!

Homework will be set each week. The children will bring homework books home on a Friday and the work should be completed and returned to school on Wednesday. The children will generally be given one or two pieces of work to complete each week; they should spend thirty minutes on each piece of work.

Spelling lists will be sent home regularly and tests given weekly. Please encourage your children to spend time learning these.

Maths homework will regularly be sent home on Sumdog, please encourage your child to complete this.
