In this newsletter we will let you know about some of the learning that will be happening this term. We will also include details of some of the other fun things we do in our classes.
Topics This Term
Our Learning Journey is all about the Victorians and is called:
Maths - Place Value within 50; Weight and Volume
Science - Seasons, we will be continuing to learn about The Weather
PSHE - Healthy Me
History - The Victorians at school and home. Our trip to Michelham Priory. Come to school dressed as a Victorian child Friday 1st March.
DT - Making our old toys.
Special Person of the Week
Every Friday both class teachers will choose a child to be the Special Person of the Week. This person will bring a sheet home to fill in with you. It is all about them and the things they like to do. Please bring it back into school the following Monday. They will have a chance to talk about themselves and their favourite things in front of the class.
Outdoor Learning and PE
Every Thursday afternoon Year 1 will have either PE with Mr Anderson or Outdoor Learning with Mrs Dyke. Please note this is a change from Wednesdays and will remain on a Thursday for the rest of the year.
A reminder will be placed in the classroom window too.
On these days Mr Anderson and Mrs Dyke will be seeing the children out of the door at the end of the day, with the help of the class Teaching Assistants.
Please make sure that your child has a complete PE kit in school all the time. This should consist of:
- A white T Shirt
- Black or Blue shorts
- Black Plimsoles
- Black or Blue Jogging bottoms in colder weather
Beginning of the Day
In order to encourage your child’s independence, please say goodbye to your child at the door once it has opened at the beginning of the school day.
We now are able to offer the children a small breakfast bagel if they would like it.
Reading at Home
Please read with your child at home. Ask your child questions about what they have just read. It is incredibly helpful and can help them to understand texts better.
Please record when you read at home in their reading record card with the date, title of the book and a comment (which can be as long or as short as you like!)
It is the children’s responsibility to come in and change their own book if they have read it. Please remind them to do this as they come in in the morning.
Reading records are collected in every Friday and the children are rewarded if they have read at least 3 times that week. When they have done this 10 times, they are awarded a book of their choosing!
We will continue to have our BIG BOOK BORROWERS. Each Friday one child from the class will be chosen to take a big book home and over the weekend they can share this with you and our Book Bear. The following Monday the big book and bear should be returned to their teacher. They will then have an opportunity to tell their class all about the story they have shared with their families at home.
Please Help Us
Please ensure that everything is named clearly. This includes uniform, P.E. kit, water bottles and lunch boxes.
Special Mentions Assembly has moved to the morning for Key Stage One!
Special Mentions Assembly is fortnightly. Four certificates per class are handed out to children that have worked particularly hard. If your child is going to receive one of these awards they will be given a slip on the Thursday before.
Also if your child receives a bookworm badge or a merit certificate it will be awarded during this assembly.
Studies show that children need 9 hours sleep every night. Thank you to those of you who make sure that your child is sleeping for long enough. It really makes a difference to their ability to concentrate in lessons.
Please remember that, if you are unable to collect your child for any reason at the end of the day, you need to let the office know who will be coming in your place. We are unable to send children home with other adults without your consent.
Thank you for your continued support.
