Topics This Term
Adventures in the Americas
(History, Art & English)
Our work in English is based on the book ‘Journey to the river sea’ by Eva Ibbotson.
In geography, we will be looking at the Americas, with particular reference to the River Amazon. This should be a nice follow on from the children’s previous learning about the Amazon Rainforest. In addition, it will lead us nicely into our history topic for term 6, which will be the Ancient Mayan Civilisation.
This term our Maths learning focuses on percentages, geometry and measures. We will be looking at a range of new concepts and applying our mathematical knowledge to solving problem tasks and developing our reasoning skills.
We will be looking at living things and their habitats, where we will be investigating life cycles of a variety of living things. Ms Dyke will be covering this area in her outdoor learning sessions also.
Outdoor Learning & PE
Outdoor learning and PE has switched over again, so 5BM will be doing Outdoor Learning first and 5LS will be doing PE first. Please can we ensure that children have the correct kit for both sessions and they bring school uniform as well!
We sent out statutory spelling lists at the end of last term. Please work with your child to practice these spellings as much as possible, so they are working as close to year 5 as possible.
Maths Passports objectives for this term were given out this week, which shows the skills all children should be able to do by the end of this term. Extra practice wherever and whenever you can would be excellent. Along with allowing time to work on their times tables packs, which were distributed at the end of last term.
Finally, this term’s homework sheet is coming home this week (23rd April). Again, there is a selection of topic-related homework to choose from. Over the course of the term, we would like them to complete three pieces. We would also like to highlight the drop-in session after school, for children and their parent(s) to come in and use our school resources to complete the tasks. This is a great way to get some homework done, so your children do not miss the end of term reward, they look forward to. This will be happening on Tuesday 14th May from 3-4pm in our classrooms.
NB: You can find a copy of the homework sheets on our school website in the curriculum tab at the top of the page.
This term, we are looking forward to two trips – Aladdin pantomime at Causeway School on Thursday 25th April, and Drusillas on the 9th May. We apologise for the lack of enrichment opportunities the Year 5 children have had this year, due to several cancelations, but hopefully the two trips we have lined up this term will make up for that!
