Term 4 Overview

Topics This Term

Raiders, Traders and Invaders
(History, Art & English)

Our work in English is based on the book ‘The Viking Boy’ by Tony Bradman. The book is about a young boy, who loses his parents to a rival tribe. He goes in search of Valhalla to bring his father back and take vengeance on his destroyer. We will be exploring this book via a new reading comprehension scheme this term, called Vipers.

This term our Maths learning focuses on Fractions, decimals and percentages. We will be looking at a range of new concepts and applying our mathematical knowledge to solving problems.

Carrying on from last term, we will be looking at Forces In Action. This term we hope to investigate water resistance, levers and pulleys, and gears.

Outdoor Learning & PE

Outdoor learning and PE has switched over again, so 5BM will be doing PE first and 5LS will be doing Outdoor Learning first. We cannot emphasise enough the need for children to remember their kits! This includes appropriate shoes for boggy conditions in the forest please.

Reading at Home

Another reminder about reading records year 5. We are not seeing enough reading records coming into
school to be checked. We want and need to see how much you’re reading at home, so show off to us please!

Spellings are continuing to be a big push this term, so please work with your child(ren) to practice spellings as much as possible, so they are working as close to year 5 as possible.

Maths Passports - we hope you are having fun with the maths passport objectives at home!

Finally, this term’s homework sheet is coming home Friday 29 th February. Again, there is a selection of topic-related homework to choose from. Over the course of the term, we would like them to complete three of the options.

There will also be an opportunity for drop-in sessions after school, for children and their parent(s) to come in and use our school resources to complete the tasks, should you be interested. Dates and details of this can be found on the homework hand out.

Thank you for all your hard work and effort into making our Anglo-Saxon and Viking Day a huge success. The children (and us staff) had an amazing day and they did us all proud with their knowledge and understanding of our topic so far.

Our next trip is Pizza Express, where - linked with our DT topic of healthy eating - the children will have the opportunity to make their own pizzas from scratch and cook them in specialist pizza ovens. More details to come, so watch this space.

Water Bottles

A gentle reminder that all children should have access to their own water bottles in school please. A number of children are having to use plastic cups and these are getting left on classroom sides, with water in, and accidents are happening. Please check your child(ren) have a named water bottle with them please.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to the term ahead and hopefully some opportunities to get you in and see what the kids have been up to over the term to come.

The Year 5 team.
